Before receiving VEPTR implants, many children have complications related to their chest cavity deformations.

Breating assistance

It is not uncommon for children to need breathing assistance. Such methods include a tracheotomy, BiPAP or CPAP, or other forms of respiratory therapy. From personal experience, I would not shy away from these. Giving your child the ability to live life from day-to-day without gasping for breath is of primary importance, along with stabilizing their long-term outlook.

Other methods

Sometimes when dealing with spinal curvature, bracing will be an appropriate preventative measure. This involves wearing a special harness around the chest to help hold the spine in place. Bracing is often effective in slowing or stopping spinal curvature, but it seems likely that the spine will rebound to curvature given that the brace is removed. It is not a permanent solution.
