Okay, so we are going to get an MRI and CATSCAN for Kimberly on Aug 18 to get a better understanding of her spine and rib cage. The problem is we tried doing the MRI about 2 yrs ago and it got stopped right after they started b/c they noticed metal in her tracheostomy tube. When they called me back in we pulled the package insert and sure enough it states there is a metal coil in the tube for support. So we just didn't do the MRI then and now I'm in the same boat. Kimberly has a Bivona cuffless 5.0. I have tried contacting the Bivona company and that might still be my answer but i seem to be getting a little of the run around. At one time it was stated that this metal will not effect the MRI except by making that area a little fuzzy, but since Bivona has been bought out and the new company doesn't want to make the same claim w/o a study of their own. So, has anyone had a child that is trached have an MRI and if so, what trach do they use?

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary-

When Collin had to have an MRI in KC (he was still a baby), we had to switch his custom bivona with an "out-of-the-box" Shiley trach just for the MRI and then switched it back. It didn't fit as nicely as the bivona so he was sedated for the procedure but they did end up getting the pictures they needed.

He hasn't had another MRI but gets CT scans regularly and hasn't had a problem with the bivona.

Hope that help.

My Daughter also has a Bivona trach and we were told by Vanderbilt Children's when it was inserted that she could not have an MRI with it in. They told us to change her trach out with a Shiley brand trach if we need to have an MRI done because they are a harder trach and do not have the metal coil. Hope this helps.. it stinks that we have to change them out though. We are getting ready to go through the same thing. I think the Mic-Key buttons have metal in them too, not so sure what we are to do about that...do you know?

Cant really help you on the trach issue, but Marlees mom mentioned to me while they were here for the eval that they had to switch out Marlees trach because ehrs ahd metal in it too.
As for Mic-KEYS, they do not contain any metal.
Havent heard of any g button or tube that contains metal at all, and Brianna went thru 5 different brands of buttons and two brands of gtubes in her life.

Kenzie has a 4.0 neo shiley trach so we have been lucky and have never had a problem with the MRI testing. Kenzie also has a Mic-Key button and has had a MRI done and no problem. Hope this helps. Wow what is the difference Bovina / Shiley?

Stacy, Bivonas are a softer kind of rubbery/silicone material that have a small wire coil inside for stability, but tend to cause less tracheal irritability and scarring issues because they are so soft and flexible.

Caroline has a Shiley trach and we've not had to change it for her MRI's.

Thanks everyone, that's what i needed to know. Sounds like we'll be doing a Shiley for a while. Now i just need to figure out what size to get her and to order it and hope it gets here in time. We change out Kimberly's trach every week. I assume the shiley's are also easy to change out......

Thanks again,
Mary

We change Kenzie's trach once a month and it is very easy to change. Amazingly it is also so very clean even though it is in there an entire month. Looks like new everytime we change it out. Kenzie has a 4.0 neo shiley.

I know they carry Shiley trachs in RT at Santa Rosa.

Mary,

We also change Caroline's trach weekly and more often as needed. It's never been a challenge to get it back in.
