I thought I'd start a Canada thread under the Canada heading. The sites I know of in Canada are in Alberta, Vancouver, BC; Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec.

Hi. Nice to see someone from Canada on this site. I didn't know that there were more people with the VEPTR in Canada. I only heard of one other little boy who had the surgery before my daughter. She had her Veptr in Feb 8, 2005. So close together. It was a scary procedure but I was not willing to allow them to fuse my nine yr old daughter's spine. She is so small already at 47 inches tall. She will be 10 in 3 mths.
Hope all is going well for you and your children. Take care

Hi Eileen,
I'm glad to meet you!

There is one other little girl here in Vancouver who was done in February too. As you would know if you read the old posts here, Malcolm is tiny and they would have had to fuse a lot of his vertebrae, many of which are not well formed in his thoracic region. I'm so glad this alternate treatment is now available, although it was a bit of a fight to get it.

There are two other Canadians who post here. They both live in Alberta. One has surgeries done at her 'local' hospital, and one travels down to Tx.

When did your daughter have surgery? Do you want to share your experience? If you want to read about ours, search on "MALCOLM" in the last six months and you'll get the saga of our surgery, and going back another year to get other bits and pieces.

Hi, I´m looking for information about VEPTER surgery in the Montreal Children Hospital because one doctor there is considering this choice for my 4 years old daughter. Please if anybody knows about any VEPTER patient in Montreal let us know.

Hi, I'd heard a few years back that Montreal was doing the surgery, but unfortunately I don't think we have any of the parents on this site. Try starting a new thread with Montreal in the title.

I did a brief search... you should do the same. The doc is listed on Spineuniverse (which may mean nothing). Then there is this presentation.

http://www.hsj.qc.ca/fpcm/SPORC/OUELLET_1.pdf

you should ask the doc how many surgeries he's done, and ask him to ask other parents if you could talk to them.

i'm just learning about it all. We heard about it all over a year ago and have been waiting since then. We're at the start of the process so we'll see how it goes. We live in Edmonton. Let me know if you are still out there.

Hi Jordy

We are in Vancouver, but will be travelling to Shriner's in Salt Lake City in May for my daughter's implant surgery.

I believe there are one or two (or three now... LOL) parents out there in Alberta...

Good luck to you and your little one!

Hi Michelle
Ahhhh, the reason for our travel (long story...)-

We were originally going to BCCH here in Vancouver for my dd's scoliosis, but decided we would try casting to stall her scoliosis (she has Marfan Syndrome), and bracing wasn't holding her curves. Casting was fairly new and we could only find a couple of doc's willing to try it. One of them was our current Ortho at Shriner's in SLC. So we transfered.....
He recently sent us to Dr John Smith at Primary in Salt Lake to see if he thought she would be a candidate for the VEPTR. He also felt that as Siobhan doesn't have TIS that we would have trouble getting it approved here in Vancouver. (Which I honestly haven't looked into...).

We love the Shriner's in Salt Lake - they are truly amazing. They have recently become an approved site for the VEPTR, and Siobhan is (supposed) to be their first implant in May. They have been doing expansions for a good few months now.
We also love the fact that our Ortho and Dr Smith work together - We feel we're lucky enough to get the best of both worlds!

Will you be going to Edmonton or Calgary? It's great that Alberta has two sites now!

We are lucky to be able to stay in Edmonton. We live 15 min. away from the Stollery which is were we will get this done. All these other options are not open to use since my girl is also on a vent so I don't know to much at this time. Thank you for the answer, I really am learning how much is out there, and it is amazing.
